Well, Willie is gone. Today I was looking for a cup to drink milk from and I saw my Willie Cup that I got from subway on the way to game 1 of the NLCS. Malone, do you still have yours? Oh well. The Mets are now 1-1 since the firing. I was impressed by the win yesterday as the Mets came from behind in the ninth to tie it off of F-Rod with David coming through with his second hit in the ninth inning(pretty sad). Then we win it in the 10th with a 2 out hr. Not too shabby of a win and we've now won our last two series. Lets hope it continues.
Well, I've got some time to waste because I'm doing my laundry so I thought I'd go over my favorite people from ESPN. I'll eventually get around to writing my least 5 favorite people from espn. It's just hard to get that top 5 because there are sooooooo many people who suck over there, ha ha. So, here we go.
#1. Erin Andrews - Please, is anyone surprised? Really? Have you seen her? He he. But, the thing with Erin is that she's not just all looks. She's actually really easy to listen to. It seems like she knows what she's talking about and she has a pleasant voice to listen to. I'm just wondering when the WWL is going to call her up to Sportscenter? She's a good sideline reporter, but I think she'd be really good doing a Sportscenter or two a week. I saw her last night doing Sportscenter from the College World Series with Robin Ventura(where's he been?) and she was actually really really good. We'll see what happens from here.
#2. Barry Melrose - I think it's the hair. No one keeps the hockey mullet tradition going stronger than Melrose. But, besides that he's actually nice to listen to. He doesn't over talk anything, gets right to the point and has some good insights into the game. There's a rumor he might be a coach again and if so ESPN will have a hard time replacing him. He's said that he's really happy at ESPN so maybe he won't go. We'll see.
#3. John Buccigross - Yeah, I looked this up and I actually spelled his last name right for once(woo!!!). I really like Bucci's schtick that he uses when he's doing highlights. He's pretty interesting, plus he always references bands that I like that I wouldn't think that he would know. I miss NHL Tonight because he did a great job on that show. Maybe the NHL will get rid of Bettman and then be back on ESPN. Probably not, but I can dream.
#4. Scott Van Pelt - Not as good at sports as the rest of the members of his family, but at least he'll have a long lasting career. SVP is by far my favorite ESPN anchor. Plus, the message he left on that random chick's vm is priceless. It's nice to know that he's just a regular guy. That's the way that he comes off on Sportscenter and it's nice that he backed it up. Apparently he even made fun of himself at a graduation speech.
#5. Buster Olney - Not only does he have an awesome blog on ESPN but he's pretty good on Baseball Tonight. He has a really good insight into what's going on in the game and he's easy to listen too when he's talking on BT. Hopefully ESPN doesn't screw this up and do something stupid, like let him go. Ha ha.

I'm a big fan of Mike and Mike in the Morning, so I'd have to say Greenberg and Golic are my favorites. They give great sports insight, and are quite entertaining. I'm also a Chris Berman fan, as goofy as he can be, I love the nicknames. I like Bob Ley too. The outside the lines specials are always great, and like Berman, he's been there since the beginning. I also have to mention Hubie Brown. Even though he's usually on ABC, and ESPN Radio broadcasts, it's such a pleasure to hear him talk about the game of basketball. He's so knowledgable and passionate about the game. Everytime he's interviewed, it makes me like basketball more. I'm looking forward to the bottom 5...
By the way, has anyone else noticed that the Yankees seem to have decided to not lose games anymore? Johnny Damon is always on base, and A-Rod is knocking runs in every game. Today was beautiful Joba strikes out 9, Melky gets on base, steals second and 3rd, then scores on a sac fly, then A-Rod knocks in the winning run. The bullpen was solid, and Mo gets his 20th save in 20 attempts. The Yankees have had a great draw in interleague play this year. They just owned the Astros and Padres, then the get the Reds and Pirates. Things are looking up.
Jeez, talk about having an easy rd. You did forget to mention that you guys lost 2 to the Mets @ Yankee Stadium. The Mets had a pretty good inter-league this year. We've won the first two at the Yankees, two of three from Texas at home, two of three from the Angels @ LA. 6-2 record so far. Can't really complain about that. We have Seattle at home for three and then the last four against the Yankees. It could end up being a pretty good inter-league schedule for the Mets this year.
Roger you are really going to town on these lists. That being said, since I live in the same town as the World Wide Leader I think my list would matter the most. I've really gotten to know these guys and gals so I know who the best is.
1. Chris Berman - he may not be in his prime anymore, but he revolutionized the recap of NFL games. He has made some great nicknames over the years as well.
2. Peter Gammons - When it comes to baseball no one knows more than Gammons.
3. Stuart Scott - He always had some good catch phrases and made Sportscenter more entertaining.
4. Scott Van Pelt - At first I didn't care for him that much, but he is pretty funny.
5. Mike Greenberg - I just think he does a good job.

Lastly, why haven't you commented on the huge signing that the Mets made? Trot Nixon is really going to help the team. I think first place is coming now. Also, I would like to mention that the Yankees made a big signing as well. Sidney Ponson the American Hideki Irabu.
Oh man, I forgot Gammons. So good. I think I like the Yankees chances the next time they face the Mets. You'll recall that A-Rod and Posada were MIA for that series. When A-Rod was out, the Yankees were 6-11. Since he came back, 20-9. Of course I'm sure Roger still thinks Miguel "tons of fun" Cabrera would have been a better option. I like the Ponson signing. He wasn't bad with Texas, and when he was last with the Yankees, he was on his best behavior. I figure they have nothing to lose with him. If he doesn't get the job done, cut him loose. Nixon should be a great addition, if only for the clubhouse. And he has a knack for getting big hits.
And yes, that kid definitely threw at that umpire, and the catcher did a very poor job of hiding it.
Perrotti, stop your bitching. Personally, if the Mets were going to get a player to help out with the offense, why didn't they get Bonds? Yes, yes, he's a big jerk and nobody likes him but at least he would make the Mets entertaining. Plus, nobody hits like Bonds, nobody. As good as A-rod's been, Bonds has been better, plus he's done it with worse players around him. In fact, he done it with noone around him. Imagine him in the middle of the Mets lineup? Once Church gets back you could have a lineup of Reyes, Church, Beltran, Bonds, Wright, Delgado, Castillo, Schneidder/Castro. Jeez, that would be insane. And, you could platoon Bonds with Alou and then have Endy Chavez come in as a late inning defense replacement. That would be sick.
Mike, we'll see what happens in the September/October.
As far as the list, you guys got most of the good ones. I'd just throw in Kenny Maine for the pure comedy he brings to the show. Some people hate him, but he has my sense of humor.
As far as Nixon, I don't think it's a bad move. He's done well so far. Alou can't stay healty (shocker there), and Church is taking forever to recover from his concussions. Plus, Mike is right that he's good for the clubhouse compared to bringing someone in midseason like a Sidney Ponson. I know the Yankees need pitching, but he is a clubhouse cancer lately. Of course he'll win games pitching for the Yankees, especially now that their offense is rolling, but I don't see him lasting for too long.
And as far as brining Bonds in over Nixon, I actually am not totally against that. He's not good for the clubhouse for obvious reasons, but he would be a great bat to have protecting Beltran or even Wright. But he is a defensive liability and has been out of the game for a while so he would be rusty. Plus who wants to pay him what he would ask for?
Yeah, but the one thing about Bonds is that he really doesn't have a choice. No one wants to sign him so if they Mets offered him just a couple Mil for the season, I think he'd take it. Plus, the Mets would give him another shot at getting back to the World Series. Plus, it would just be for one year.
I think Bonds would be great for the Mets, as long as he agreed to play on their terms. No special treatment, no entourage, no personal trainers/chefs/etc. I think guys like Ponson tend to be a bit more tame in NY because their antics end up on the back page of several papers and all over sports talk radio. This isn't Arlington Texas. You can't fly under the radar. There are also too many solid veterans on the team to put up with any of his BS. Like I said, what have they got to lose. He's a temporary insurance policy. Yes Roger, I'm looking forward to September and October.
I was thinking more about the DH, and I can see how the AL teams might have more of an advantage at home. NL teams are not built to have a big power hitter sitting on the bench that doesn't play every day. AL teams all have someone. Who's going to DH for the Mets when they face the Yankees? Endy Chavez?
Yeah, the DH is definitely a big advantage for the AL. that's why the NL needs to win the all-star game so they can have home field advantage. Plus, playing in the NL it makes the AL team have to decide who sits and who plays. Does anyone know what Ponson did in Texas to get canned? I never found out. I bet he nailed the manager's daughter(I don't know who their manager is, so hopefully he's old so this won't be disgusting).
Not that I really want to stick up for Ponson, but he's more of a clubhouse cancer than Bonds? I find that pretty ludicrous. I'm pretty sure the Yankees will just let him go if he causes any problems. If you sign Bonds, you pretty much have to put up with him for the rest of the season.

Texas designated Ponson for assignment June 6, cutting him loose “for disrespecting teammates and club personnel,” general manager Jon Daniels said.
One report said Ponson had been put on notice by Texas officials after creating a disturbance at a hotel bar in Florida during a road trip. He had been informed that no other problems would be tolerated.
I'll try to offer some ESPN personality analysis when I have more time, but Mets fans, Trot Nixon is not going to do anything for you, I'm sorry. For the season, he'll either end up injured (85% chance) or with a .250-.260 average (15% chance). He has nothing left. He is a former steroid user. There's a reason Boston decided to part ways with Pedro, Damon, and Nixon - they were all toast.
Damon toast? Give me a break. He had a SLIGHT drop off last year due to some nagging leg issues, but right now he's playing as well as he's ever played. I understand some animosity as a sox fan, but I think it's a little ridiculous to label him toast.
Hey Mike, did you know for the price of A-rod you could get David Wright, Jose Reyes, Dan Haren, Kerry Wood, Brandon Webb. And you'd still have money left over to sign CC Sabathia next year. I just thought I'd point that out.
Hey Rog, Did you know that if the Yankees wanted to, they could pay all of those guys and A-Rod? Anyway, just face facts. A-Rod is better than David Wright no matter how you look at it. Period. Reyes is too prone to injuries, slumps, and tempur tantrums... He's like Willy Mays Hays in Major League, before he stopped trying to hit home runs. Haren is a nice pitcher, but nothing to write home about. Wood? Are you serious? He's more fragile than that lamp from A Christmas Story. Brandon Webb would be nice, but it's not like he was available. I also have my doubts about Sabathia, I think he has peaked and his best days are behind him. And he seems be be on the Bartolo Colon diet, which leads to nothing good. If I were the Yankees, I'd put together a nice package to get that kid Edinson Volquez from the Reds. He's for real. And he's 24.

Rob, what's with the Nixon hating? You think there was a better option for that price? Please let me know who, and I'll alert the Mets. We're not looking for a long-term solution, just someone to help out while Alou and Church are recovering. Aguila and Evans weren't exactly helping. Man, you Red Sox fans really jump on a guy as soon as the team lets him go. Respect the game a little more please. Haha.
Roger, that comparison with A-Rod was kind of random, although I get your point that he is way overpaid and you could almost field a full All-Star squad for the same price as just A-Rod. But that's baseball and that won't change.
Lets just hope the Mets don't go on their usual losing streak now.
Well the one major hole in Roger's comparison of the price of A-rod equaling David Wright, Jose Reyes, Dan Haren, Kerry Wood, Brandon Webb is that none of these other guys have hit free agency except for Kerry Wood who has been injured the last few years. You don't think the Mets are going to have to pony up some money in the years to come to keep Wright and Reyes?
